The Military’s presence in Virginia is a major economic activity. Its impact on the two MSA’s with a total of 21 installations is extremely significant. Military retirees or those leaving the service are an excellent source of trained, disciplined, skilled labor.

Approximately 124,000 active-duty personnel and civilian employees. This number does not include Afloat, Reserve or National Guard personnel.
Defense Expenditures
In FY 2014, Department of Defense (DoD) expenditures in Virginia exceeded $54 billion annually. Virginia is the lead state in per capita defense spending and a close second in total DoD investment.
Reserve & National Guard
Approximately 25,000 Reserve & National Guard personnel.
Annually Discharged
On average, 18,000 military personnel are discharged annually in the area.
