Airports

Just twenty miles west of New Kent, Richmond International Airport offers eight scheduled passenger carriers and two overnight cargo carriers. And, as a Designated Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ 207), it’s a reliable avenue for transporting people and goods. They handle over three million national and international travelers annually, so are no stranger to the traveler’s experience.
Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport is approximately fifty miles east of New Kent County and offers an easy-going flying experience. They recently began offering mobile ordering pre-security pickup at their “PHFirst Stop” convenience center. Additionally, there are no imposed time limits in any PHF parking lots.
Norfolk International Airport is the major airport serving Coastal Virginia and North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Presently, they rank in the top 13% of the country’s airports in terms of passengers served annually (nearly 5 million in 2025). Their website is extremely user-friendly, and they offer flights to over 100 cities just 74 miles east of New Kent County. They have six scheduled passenger carriers and 3 overnight cargo carriers.
New Kent County Airport is conveniently located between the cities of Richmond and Williamsburg. Our county airport provides the visitor or traveler a welcome relief from more congested airspaces or road systems. W96 has a 3,600-foot runway.

Although not pictured on the map, it’s important to note the proximity of Dulles International Airport to NKC. Dulles served nearly 30 million travelers in 2025 and is also recognized as a Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ137). With a wide variety of international flights, travel options, nutritious food and drink choices, and much more — IAD is sure to check all your boxes and is located just under 140 miles north of New Kent County. They have 34 scheduled passenger carriers, 22 scheduled international passenger carriers, 43 direct international passenger carriers, and 24 overnight cargo carriers.

Newport News Marine Terminal (NNMT) is the main break-bulk terminal for the Port of Virginia. With direct cargo loading on & off ships to and from the CSX break-bulk service as well as accessibility from three major Virginia roadways, this provides a prime venue for shipments. They have almost 43,000 feet of CSX direct rail access, nearly 5,000 feet of total pier space, four container cranes, and covered and container storage available all on 140 acres of property.
Just 18 miles from open sea with 50-ft channel depth, the VA Port Authority in Hampton Roads offers one of the most frequent direct sailing schedules of any port. 50+ motor-carriers offer full-freight-handling and load-consolidation services, and 75 international shipping lines are just some of the reasons that VA Port Authority in Hampton Roads is the U.S. East Coasts’ 4th largest port.
Located in the heart of the Hampton Roads area, Norfolk International Terminals (NIT) make up the Port of Virginia’s largest terminal with 648 acres, 14 container cranes, five berths, three finger piers, and much more. With almost 90,000 feet of direct rail access, NIT is ideal for the movement of goods across different spaces and topographies.
On a modest 219 acres just down the river from NIT sits Portsmouth Marine Terminal. With 3,540 feet of wharf, three berths, and six cranes, PMT is able to handle container, break-bulk and RO/RO cargo. PMT also has direct access to both CSX and NS railways. Built on a green-field site and opened in September 2007, APM’s Portsmouth Virginia terminal, now operated by the Virginia Port Authority, sets a new standard for U.S. port automation. It was built to be the newest, safest, most efficient and environmentally friendly terminal in North America.
The Richmond Marine Terminal (RMT) offers another centrally located option for maritime shipping. RMT is praised by the VEDP for its frequent “container-on-barge” service (thrice weekly)! RMT sits on 121 acres, is just off of I-95, and offers up to 52k forklift capacity.

Two major railroads run right through New Kent County: Norfolk Southern and CSX Transportation.
Norfolk Southern: Operates approximately 21,000 route miles across 22 states and the District of Columbia. Links customers to markets throughout the world with connections to all major eastern container ports and rail partners in the west.
CSX Transportation: Encompasses about 21,000 route miles of track in 23 states, the District of Columbia and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec. Connections to rail partners in the west for access to additional markets.
